💤 The State of Sleep in the UK: The Most Common Sleep Problems and How to Fix Them

😴 Are We Sleeping Worse Than Ever?

At some point, most of us have struggled with sleep — whether it’s difficulty nodding off after a stressful day or unsettling nightmares that disturb our rest.
For some, poor sleep happens occasionally. For others, ongoing sleep disorders can have a serious impact on daily life.

Curious about how widespread these issues are, we looked into what sleep problems people in the UK search for most often, and where these sleep-related searches are coming from.

🛌 The Most Common Sleep Problems in the UK

There are many reasons people lose sleep, but which sleep dilemmas are most common across Britain?
Using Google data, Kallysleep uncovered the sleep issues keeping the UK awake — and the questions people most want answered.

💬 The UK’s Most Common Sleep Questions (and Expert Answers)

Getting a good night’s sleep can feel like a mystery, so we asked Kallysleep founder and sleep expert Ori Leslau to share his advice on the most common sleep questions searched by Brits.

💤 How Can I Stop Snoring?

Ori says:

“Snoring can result from several factors — being overweight, having a cold, sleeping on your back, or drinking alcohol — all of which increase the likelihood of a noisy night.
The good news? There are many simple ways to minimise snoring.”

Top Tips:

  • Lose a few pounds – Exercise and a balanced diet can reduce fat around the neck and throat, easing airway pressure.
  • Change your sleep position – Sleeping on your back lets your tongue fall backwards, partially blocking the airway. Try side sleeping instead.
  • Avoid alcohol before bed – Alcohol may make you drowsy but also relaxes throat muscles, worsening snoring and reducing sleep quality.

😫 Why Am I Always Tired?

Feeling tired all the time is often the result of poor-quality sleep or sleep deprivation.
Chronic tiredness affects both your physical and mental health, impacting your focus, mood, and energy levels.

Ori’s Top Tips for Combating Fatigue:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Lose weight to boost energy
  • Cut back on caffeine
  • Reduce alcohol intake and drink more water
  • Eat balanced meals throughout the day — don’t skip them

🕯️ Why Can’t I Sleep?

Ori says:

“Insomnia can be incredibly frustrating. Over time, it drains your energy, affects your mood, and can even contribute to mental and physical health issues. It’s essential to tackle it early.”

Sleep Expert Tips:

  • Wind down for at least 30 minutes before bed — dim the lights, take a warm bath, or read a book.
  • Switch off screens – Phones, tablets, and laptops emit blue light that keeps your brain in ‘daytime mode.’
  • Try mindfulness – Gentle yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can help quiet the mind and prepare the body for rest.

📈 The State of Our Sleep: 2019 vs. 2020

By comparing Google search data from 2019 to 2020, we can see a clear pattern: Brits are struggling more with sleep than before.

Searches for terms such as “acute insomnia” and “vivid dreams” saw some of the largest year-on-year increases.
Across 50 sleep-related queries, total search volume rose from 6,384,570 in 2019 to 7,017,670 in 2020 — a 9.92% increase.

Simply put, 2020 wasn’t a good year for our sleep.

🗺️ The UK’s Most Sleepless Areas

To find out which parts of the country are searching most for sleep advice, we compared the number of sleep-related Google searches with each city’s population — giving us a figure for annual sleep-related searches per 10,000 people.

This revealed which regions are most affected by sleep problems and which are actively seeking solutions.

🔍 Methodology

Using Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs, we compiled a list of 50 sleep-related search terms with significant search volumes.
We then analysed data from October 2018–September 2019 and October 2019–September 2020 to compare year-on-year changes.

We cross-referenced search volumes with the 30 most populated UK cities (based on ONS data) to calculate the number of sleep-related searches per 10,000 people.
